a beautiful album of quirky songs crafted at home sung in Portugese and English featuring Matt Mondanile, Rita Borba, Luis Severo, and Laura Ramalho

By the time this cassette was made, Luis Teixeira, popularly known as Genes, was broke living with no food in his apartment. You can see the hunger in his eyes. Like Mike said on his latest "Disco!" record "You see this fucked up braids ma, I'm trying to get paid" and this New Images release is just a sneak peak of all the hard work Genes been putting behind closed doors trying to see his break. Growing in poverty with nothing but a broken dream of becoming a (church) musician, Genes grew up as a reject all his life, listening to anti pop stars like Ariel Pink or David Bowie, cat-copying their hairstyle and snatching their falsetto easiness blended with a rich melodic sense that echoes both Beach Boys sweetness and Motown's soulfulness. Mixed with a more pop rock approach of new contemporaries such as Ducktails himself and a psychedelic crush on essence and all you can find in Genes tunes is a haziness of a children's play, like in the track "Conde D'alva" that offers you both dreamyness in songcraft that hollows and screams for more
